Flight booking tool
There are multiple flight booking tools available online which you can use to book cheap flights to South Africa. Our favourite tool is Momondo. We’ll show you why in our step by step guide on how to book cheap flights to South Africa.
Step by step guide to book cheap flights to South Africa
The process to book cheap flights to South Africa is a repetitive process and may take a couple of minutes, but it is definitely worth it!
2 – Determine a range of dates when you would like to travel to South Africa. The price of flights to and from South Africa greatly depends on the time of year. Peak season, which is from December to about mid January is by far the most expensive time to book flights to and from South Africa. Not only are flights expensive this time of year, but so is accommodation. If you are on a tight travel budget, avoid this time of year!
The range of dates should ideally be able to span over a week, meaning you would be to fly to South Africa on a variety of dates, not just one date.
3 – Select the currency and region of your choice in the top right of the screen as seen below:
4 – Select “Return trip” as seen below:
5 – Enter your ideal local airport in the “From city or airport” field. Enter “Cape Town” in the to “To city, country or region” field. We will handle the fact that you wish to fly home from Port Elizabeth later.
Enter your most ideal date for departure in the first calendar field. Remember that your return date from South Africa will need to be 14 days after arrival if you are taking part in our South African holiday package. Also it will take approximately a day to fly to South Africa. Generally set your return date to 15 days after your arrival date (when you book cheap flights to South Africa, you may need an additional stop over). Enter your departure date in the second calendar field.
Enter the number of adult, children, and infant travelers. Press search.
Below is an example for 2 adults flying from Manchester to Cape Town. The couple plans to start their South African holiday package on the 6 September 2017. They therefore will set their departure date for the 5 September 2017. They set the return date for 20 September as this takes the 14 days of the holiday package into account.
6 – Wait for Momondo to finish processing. This may take a few minutes as Momondo looks for flights from multiple websites.
A list of flights will be displayed in order of cheapest to most expensive. The results will look similar to the image below:
7 – Whats of interest to us, are the bar graphs at the top of the results. These show the the approximate cheapest prices to fly on days around the same time as your entered dates. We will use this to determine the cheapest days to fly. To see the approximated price for flying on a particular day, hover over the segment of the bar graph as shown below:
8 – In our case it seems like the cheapest combination of days to fly are on our original dates, so we will not change them.
9 – As our trip ends in Port Elizabeth and not Cape Town, we will need to add a flight from Port Elizabeth to our home / local airport.
We will modify the initial search parameters by using the dates we found to be the cheapest and by adding another flight from Port Elizabeth to our home.
First click on where it says “Retun trip”. This will show two other options. Select “Multi city” as seen below:
This will then add a different return leg to the flight. You need to edit this! For the return flight enter “Port Elizabeth” for the departure airport. Enter your local (home) airport for the destination of the return leg if it is not there already! Make sure you enter the dates you found out to be the cheapest in the previous steps.
See our example below:
10 – Press search and wait again for the results. A list of flights will be displayed in order of cheapest to most expensive.
11 – However, we need to adjust the departure time flying out of Port Elizabeth, as we will only be able to fly out in the afternoon earliest for this holiday package. We do this by first clicking on the outbound tab (see the circle 1 below). Then we adjust the slider by dragging it until 13:00 (see the circle 2 below).
12 – We now see a final list of flights which match our criteria. Again the flights are displayed in order of price, with the cheapest being displayed on top.
Below is our cheapest flight found:
To see more information about this set of flights such as departure and arrival times, stop overs, etc, press the See details button (circled in red above). This should show you something like this:
13 – Sometimes the cheapest flight may not be the most ideal. It could be that flights which are slightly more expensive have better flight times (e.g. may have shorter stop over times). Take a look through the list to see which flight you want to take. Once you have found the perfect cheap flight, press the “Go to site” button (circled in red below).
This takes you to the site where you actually book the ticket. It sometimes takes a while for these sites to load, so be patient.
