Tuesday Tunes: Impi – Johnny Clegg & Juluka

A South African classic, “Impi” by Johnny Clegg and Juluka, is well known by all South Africans these days.

It is often played at major sporting events where fans in the stadium will sing along to create an awe-inspiring atmosphere!

However, when the song was initially released in 1981 in Apartheid South Africa it was banned from the national radio. But this didn’t stop it becoming an underground hit.

Juluka was formed by Johnny Clegg and Sipho Mchunu. It was a multi-racial band and they were forced to keep a low profile under the strict Apartheid laws. Juluka’s music was often identified as part of the movement against the racial dividing Apartheid regime.

Johnny Clegg, who still performs today, is often referred to as the “White Zulu” as he often mixes his lyrics with English and Zulu.
